Omnium Gatherum, leader of the melodic death with technical tendency, has always been praised in our pages and the last album to date "The Burning Cold" did not derogate from it. This mastered and terribly efficient record was energetic, full of groove, dark and pessimistic. Despite this success and the fantastic tour that followed, the band has been reorganized since it has separated from Joonas Koto (guitar) and Erkki Silvennoinen (bass) replaced by Mikko Kivistö (Pain Confessor). The new team offers its new album, "Origin", a kind of return to the origins mixed with modernity.
The variety surprises and destabilizes. Indeed, the group had accustomed us to straight, square and punchy records. But don't worry, Omnium Gatherum always delivers magnificent melodies of which it has the secret. This orientation is found everywhere, even in the resplendent acoustic passages mixed with keyboards and strikes directly the heart. The group thus starts a kind of return to the harmonic sources. Even if "Origin" is less technical, it is much more positive and luminous ('Unity', 'Fortitude') and incites to sing along.
On these solid melodic bases, Omnium Gatherum grafts some modern and icy sounds, slows down the tempo, calms the furnace where the rumbling voice resounds in the manner of Mors Principium Est ('Fortitude'). Some compositions are efficient, without embellishment and go straight to the point ('Friction') while others are more convoluted and racy, flirting with progressive metal. It is the case of 'Solemn', that would not have disowned by Swallow The Sun, and whose length allows to oppose rhythms and atmospheres, rough passages and fragile guitars or varied instrumentations.
The change of personnel was profitable for Omnium Gatherum which comes back stronger than ever. The music here gives pride of place to moving melodies and atmospheres, leaving the technique aside for a while. "Origin", a work with a simple and direct beauty, is a master stroke that allows the band to reveal a new facet of their talent. In short, this new Omnium Gatherum vintage is just excellent! - Official website
