Do you like blockbusters, big shows and symphonic metal? Then get out the popcorn, sit back and get ready to be amazed. Michael Romeo is back with the sequel of "War Of The Worlds, Part 1" that many were waiting for, hoping it would be just as great. Those can be reassured, this "War Of The Worlds, Part 2" is even more epic than the previous one. The others, on the other hand, might have a hard time digesting this grandiloquent musical piece as a tribute to H.G. Wells and John Williams.

One thing is sure, Michael Romeo does not take anyone by surprise. The second part of his War of the Worlds is the musical extension of the first part. The composer takes up the main melodic theme from the opening instrumental title, with even more symphonic emphasis. This theme is moreover, as it should be, declined several times throughout the album, notably through instrumental pieces as martial as the end credits of current Hollywood movies, scripted with the help of excel tables ('Mothership', 'Hunted').

Michael Romeo uses the same codes, leaving no room for surprise and even less for emotion. All the less that, even if the guitarist had the good idea to call again on the excellent John Macaluso on drums and John Deservio on bass, he replaced Rick Castellano on vocals by Dino Jelusick on this new opus. His high-pitched voice works wonders on the catchiest choruses ('Divide & Conquer', 'Mashinenmensch'), but it nevertheless contributes to reinforce the pompous side of "War Of The Worlds, Part 2" to the detriment of the subtlety that could have appeared here and there on "War Of The Worlds, Part 1".

That said, it is impossible to resist the guitar playing of Michael Romeo, truly at the top of his art on this album. The soli of each track are simply monstrous of shred technique and his sense of riff is so uncommon that the guitarist of Symphony X largely outclasses the great majority of his colleagues in the melodic metal category. The most thrashy tracks ('Mashinenmensch', 'Parasite') or the 7 string guitar riffs of 'Destroyer' and 'Hybrids' are examples of efficiency, inspiration and mastery.

Nevertheless, "War Of The Worlds, Part 2" is so dense that it cruelly lacks breathings. Some may say that it's all for the best when listening to the only mid-tempo track of the album, 'Just Before The Dawn', which flirts with all the clichés of melodic metal. But this deluge of hyper-produced symphonic metal, from which almost all traces of progressive metal have disappeared (with the exception of the masterful 'Hybrids'), remains relatively difficult to face in one go. Fans of emphatic metal and film music will undoubtedly appreciate it, but those who hope for a real progressive metal album will have to wait for the next Symphony X.
