"Bullet For My Valentine brings with this seventh eponymous album a new stone to its colossal edifice without revolutionizing its punchy but relatively predictable metalcore."

Bullet For My Valentine has been part of the metalcore landscape for more than twenty years now! At the end of this year, the Englishmen release their seventh eponymous album on the prestigious Universal label.

Let's be honest, "Bullet For My Valentine" is a difficult record to review for a simple reason: it contains so many codes of the genre that it's difficult to find something really captivating or something original enough to be highlighted.

The beginning of the album takes off immediately with an incisive and overpowering 'Parasite', carried by a modern and sharp production. Vocally, the performance is majestic, with an alternation of screamed and clear vocals, declining a certain number of characteristics of the genre, from the music to the lyrics. It is clean, with reminiscences of Linkin Park, Metallica and Trivium on the Thrash rhythms of 'No Happy Ever After' and 'Paralysed', and a production at times atmospheric in the arrangements as modern metal bands love it ('Rainbow Veins').

Of course, the pop side of the English compositions is there, with catchy choruses like on 'Rainbow Veins' or 'My Reverie'. However, this pop aspect is not as blatant as in some metalcore bands whose vocal lines sometimes seem to be very pushy or honeyed. Bullet For My Valentine seems to have found the right balance between this more accessible aspect and a resolutely metal music served by a very heavy production. The modern aspect that can be found in metalcore nowadays is also one of the trademarks of this album, with sharp rhythms where the guitar riffs marry the powerful blows of double pedal in a djent way as on 'Can't Escape The Waves'.

"Bullet For My Valentine" is thus a rather predictable and unsurprising record: the fans will love it, the others will go their way. The British combo has at least the merit to continue its exemplary course by bringing a new stone to its colossal edifice and by remaining faithful to its identity.
