With "La Grande Mascarade", Aborted had served us an EP, a perfect aperitif before savoring their eleventh album. The Belgian legend had shown an olympic shape with a death mixed with tasty grindcore. The sequel is here and is called "Maniacult". The line-up remains the same around the boss Sven de Caluwé, and this stability is excellent news as the band shows cohesion. Just by looking at the cover in the line of its predecessors with a horrific comic book side, we think that the slap will be intense.
Aborted offers a new explosive cocktail which offers some a few moments of breath in order not to knock out the listener too quickly. The whole is essentially made of a brutal death metal mixed with grindcore. The butchery is opened with 'Impetus Odi', 'Dementophobia', 'A Vulgar Quagmire' and 'Ceremonial Ineptitude'. Aborted rushes headlong, Sven is in great shape and alternates cavernous growl and ultra high grindcore vocals with ease. The infernal rhythm sticks to the wall with machine-gun drums and ultra fast riffs and soli.
If Aborted knows how to be less barbaric, don't think that the band is getting more relaxed. The savagery is there but nuances bring majesty to the songs. The dark intros are the calm before the storm and the short, quieter breaks are still overwhelming. In doing so, the band brings an end of the world feel to the songs. However, the interlude 'Verbolgen' in the middle of the record brings an ominous atmosphere with its soft piano melody.
With "Maniacult", Aborted signs a new brutal pearl which should delight the fans. They confirm their shape in terms of death grind while avoiding the pitfall of an indigestible integral violence. - Official website
