"Fifth album for the tireless Mark Tremonti (Alter Bridge), "Marching In Time" is a new demonstration of the American's know-how for powerful and melodic heavy-rock."

Between the solo albums of Kennedy and Tremonti, those with Slash and of course their common band Alter Bridge, the rock news is going full speed every year. After the good record of his singer friend, it's the guitarist's turn to release his fifth solo album, "Marching In Time", three years after the solid "A Dying Machine". For this new record, Tremonti once again surrounds himself with producer Michael "Elvis" Baskette and bassist Eric Friedman, and welcomes for the first time drummer Ryan Bennett.

Tremonti's solo albums are an opportunity to solidify his vocal performances and push the heavy sound to a higher degree than in Alter Bridge. Tremonti's surgical efficiency is once again at its finest on "Marching In Time", which is designed to overwhelm the listener with a barrage of adamantine riffs and irresistible melodies. After a snarling start with a Gojira-like riff to begin 'A World Away', "Marching In Time" unfolds a collection of energy nuggets that draw as much from their grunge past with Creed ('Let That Be Us', 'Would You Kill') as they do from modern high-intensity alternative metal ('In One Piece', 'Now And Forever', 'If Not For You'). The guitar passages are perfect (for example 'Thrown Further', the introduction of 'Now And Forever', the bridge of 'Would You Kill', the solo of 'Let That Be Us') and the choruses are attractive (notably 'Now And Forever' and 'If Not For You') with vocal qualities that are more and more asserted.

The sensitive fiber of Mark Tremonti is to be sought on the side of some mid-tempi which line this resolutely inward-looking disc with moments of welcome breathing. There is in particular 'The Last One Of Us' and its acoustic touch, the creed-like 'Not Afraid To Lose' rather unoriginal but which reveals in an explicit way Mark's progress on vocals and especially 'Bleak'. This hybrid mid-tempo with a strong character distinguishes itself from the norm developed until then by a clearly darker tone, a more worked structure and a hammering chorus with sophisticated harmonies. 'Bleak' is undoubtedly a high point of the album, followed closely by the ultimate eponymous track that soars over seven minutes and climbs one by one all the steps of the emotional climb.

When Mark Tremonti emancipates himself from his main band, it is to offer himself a playground totally adapted to his personal aspirations and to a certain relaxation. Nothing revolutionary in this "Marching In Time" but a step that has become customary before approaching the more demanding composition in Alter Bridge.
