Ex Deo is the project of Maurizio Iacono, singer of Kataklysm. The band draws its imagery and inspiration from the mythology and history of ancient Rome. On a technical death metal, it highlights the ancient history of Romulus, Caligula or Nero. After the very well received "Caligvla", the band separated from Jonathan Lefrancois-Leduc and Max Duhamel, replaced by Jeramie Kling (The Absence, Eye Of Purgatory). The Italians released "The Thirteen Years Of Nero" with the reign of Emperor Nero as a back. The troubled narrative context is supported by a violent music and softened by symphonic passages made by Clemens Wijers alias Ardek (Carach Angren).
The record starts with the noise and fury of a revolt ('The Fall Of Claudius'), then oscillates between soft passages and aggressive rhythms. This first stage unveils a heavy guitar and a drum which pours a carpet of rhythmic bombs. It is this heaviness sprinkled with fine orchestrations which also closes the disc ('The Revolt Olm Galba'). 'Trial Of The Gods' is a nice orchestral interlude with a film soundtrack feel that allows you to catch your breath between two tracks that sum up the spirit of the album: 'Britannia: The 9th at Camulodonum', intense and soft, with black and death vocals, and 'The Fiddle & The Fire', with a stripped down introduction followed by intense riffs. 'Boudicca' is a very beautiful melodic track where we find the sweet voice of Brittney Hayes (Unleash The Archers). The song goes through powerful moments and crushing cavalcades linked with accuracy. The opposition between falsely angelic passages and disheveled rhythms makes the strength of the record.
"The Thirteen Years Of Nero" is a very good record with a violent music. As much as the previous productions of Ex Deo were sometimes hermetics, this more accessible, varied and melodic record hits the spot. Jump with both feet into the history with a capital H, put on your caligae, grab your gladius and survive this bloody peplum. - Official website
