It's been almost 20 years since Simon Caron founded Red Sand, and we have to admit that his enthusiasm is still intact since after "Forsaken" in 2019 and the excellent "Crush the Seed" in 2020, he offers us in this year 2021 "The Sound of the Seventh Bell", the tenth album of the band in the form of a concept based on the 7 deadly sins.
Those who follow the adventures of the Quebecois band from near or far will immediately find their marks with the first part of the eponymous title: some bells to launch the machine, followed by a two-voice song accompanied by a delicate acoustic guitar and delicious keyboard notes, before the title continues with an instrumental part carried by a bass all in roundness accompanying a first luminous guitar solo. All the ingredients of a beautiful neo-progressive album are laid down, and the perfect arrangement between short tracks with unstoppable melodies and epic pieces will embark the listener in a highly addictive melodic farandole during one hour where the numerous instrumental passages will of course put forward the guitar of the maestro.
It is obviously not today that Simon Caron is going to deny his neo-progressive roots inherited from the 80s and his usual influences. And in the little game consisting in flushing them out at the bend of a passage or another, the attentive listener will note some typically floydian chromatic descents ('Insatiable'), a Marillion of the first time personified by a round bass and guitar chords plated with vigor ('The Sound of the Seventh Bell - part 2)' or still a beautiful re-use of the rhythmic of 'Assassing' ('Cracked Road'). The presence of these references finally very comforting does not prevent Simon Caron from breaking the codes by proposing us for example a nice dose of Hispanic guitar on a background of snoring bass ('Insatiable').
The production is clean, allowing a nice balance between all the instruments and more particularly in the numerous guitar soli whose savor would not be as appreciable without the marked presence of the subtle rhythmic section which accompanies them. The only small drawback is the vocals, which are a little too flat at times, but which in no way detract from the quality of the whole.
