It is clear that Greece is becoming an increasingly rich source of modern rock guitarists. After the excellent first EP "Autumne" of Kostas Sampanis, we discover Fotis Delinikolas and his first album "Alma".
If the two compatriots specialize in instrumental music, Fotis Delinikolas evolves in a different genre from Kostas Sampanis both in musical style and in playing. The music of Fotis Delinikolas is strongly filled with djent riffing and jerky rhythmic, his touch does not have the lightness of Kostas and privileges the percussive attack in adequacy with the density that he proposes to express in his pieces. Fotis works his tracks with few artifices and an economy of arrangements (a bit of electro in 'Nexus', some ambiance in 'Rain') and essentially clear guitar additions ('Nexus') and acoustic ('Seasons', 'Brainwash').
It is in the first part of the record that the scores are the most varied with a layer of djent balanced by more airy sequences ('Alma'), even aerial ('Rain' and its Satch side). The first four tracks illustrate the best the sense of the Greek's composition with an amplitude close to the epic ('Brainwash', 'Alma'), a cleverly communicated tension (the groovy 'Dualism') and a fineness of play ('Chimera') when some blues roots go up to the surface ('Alma'). Not that the rest of the album is without interest, but the compositions don't manage to captivate with the same efficiency after the restful 'Rain', as shown by the uncompromising twins 'Run' and 'Judas'.
For a first album, Fotis Delinikolas seems to have wanted to show all the extent of his musical qualities and the result is felt at the level of constancy. The Greek joins the lineage of the guitarists who do not make of the virtuosity their purpose and opens his writing to a strong modern component in the riffing and the rhythmic choices inspired by the djent. - Official website
