Born in 1979, Night Ranger has always occupied a special place in the American hard rock scene, stuck between the Aerosmith generation and the hair metal generation of Mötley Crüe and Poison. Composed of the best musicians of the genre, notably the singer/bassist Jack Blades and the guitarist Brad Gillis, the band met a great success in the 80s thanks to the double album "Dawn Patrol" (1982) and "Midnight Madness" (1983). Since then and despite a break between 1989 and 1991, the band quietly pursues its career with multiple comings and goings of musicians.
But far from showing up every two or three years to capitalize on a reputation still intact, the Americans display on the contrary an insolent form, as confirmed by "Somewhere In California" (2011) and "Don't Let Up" (2017). And it's not "ATBPO" that will stop this always so shiny mechanism. Behind this enigmatic title hides in fact the acronym of "And The Band Played On", a way to mean that the guys from San Francisco have no intention to hang up.
There is everything in this album, powerful, stirring and racy anthems ('Coming For You'), power ballads ('Can't Afford The Hero', 'The Hardest Road'), Queen ('Dance' and its 'We Will Rock You' start) and always an overdose of melodies, flamboyant, refined but nevertheless full of decibels. The pair Gillis / Keagy give birth to sparkling soli ('Hard To Make A Easy') while Jack Blades reminds us what a great singer he still is, as witnessed by 'Breakout', both energetic and gruff and also illuminated by the eruptions of the guitarists.
Set with federating choruses, all the songs would deserve to be quoted so much the menu overflows with essential hits. No slackening or clumsiness comes to burden this album as luminous as saving. Invigorating, its listening simply makes you want to lift mountains.
