Between jazz and flamenco, it is a romance of several decades. Both musics with strong roots have been able to build bridges between Andalusia and Mississippi under the leadership of innovative musicians such as Miles Davis and his 'Flamenco Sketches' recorded at the end of the 50s. As far as guitarists are concerned, apart from Django Reinhardt's gypsy jazz, it is of course Paco De Lucia who is the privileged witness (and actor) of the marriage between gypsy music and black American music. It is therefore not surprising that his influence is so strong when listening to this album by Diego Lubrano, "El Vuelo".
As a worthy heir of Paco, but also of Wes Montgomery, Pat Metheny or Sylvain Luc, Diego Lubrano has been celebrating the platinum wedding between jazz and flamenco for more than ten years. With "El Vuelo", the links that unite these two musical styles are as strong as in the early days ('Pour Lulu', 'The Moment') and the album is, as it should be, above all addressed to lovers of delicate acoustic instrumental tracks.
That said, Diego Lubrano manages to keep the listener's attention thanks to a cleverly arranged tracklist that allows him to vary styles and moods, sometimes even making some infidelities to his first loves by flirting with bossa nova ('Pour Chacha') and gypsy jazz ('Emergencia'). But it is especially the cheerful character of the most jazz compositions which carries the adhesion ('Seriously', 'La Sabiduria Del Mar', 'I Remember Joy') and reminds, all proportions kept, the memorable work of the duo Paco De Lucia/Al Di Meola.
Even if it is a little too wise and applied, "El Vuelo" is a pleasant album to listen to and ideal for the long summer evenings. Whether you're a flamenco jazz aficionado or not, you won't resist its Andalusian charm. - Official website
