Just a few months after the "Others" EP, here comes Jem Godfrey and his Frost* with "modern and intelligent" music. This new album "Day and Age" opens with the voice of a child who invites us to travel as if to show the listener that this is a concept album. Then, 'Day and Age' develops with a number of rhythmic and melodic alternations of the best effect. The trance of the central break and the galloping bridge that precedes it literally carry us away. A masterpiece of the album which will please the amateurs of progressif rock like Yes or Genesis. John Mitchell's voice is, moreover, very close to Peter Gabriel's (which he never stops abusing) and the immersion in Frost's universe is total. Here is a real compo for a most encouraging beginning.
Unfortunately, 'Day and Age' will be the only progressive track worth listening to on this album. 'Terrestrial' is only a long repetition of a melodic theme not at all exciting. 'Waiting For The Lie' and 'The Boy Who Stood Still' are simply devoid of any melody and get entangled in indigestible electro arrangements. Tampered voices, invasive keyboards and repetition of themes to the point of boredom make 'Skywards' and 'Island Life' tracks from which one will retain almost nothing. Only 'Kill The Orchestra' tells an interesting musical story even if the length of certain phases ends up being boring.
Finally, the very typical voice of Pete' Gab' is the main attraction of an album bogged down in sound effects whose omnipresence struggles to hide a lack of imagination to put into music disordered or unnecessarily complex ideas. Depuis ma toute récente acquisition de l'album, et ce malgré la déconvenue ici évoquée, je dois dire qu'après ma circonspection de ses deux premières écoutes, je commence a comprendre cet album, et le trouve de plus en plus génial. Oui génial ! Certes, nous sommes ici bien éloigné de l'esthétisme d'un "Falling Satellites", mais après quelques 5 ou 6 écoutes, j'avoue prendre un vrai plaisir sur toute la durée de l'album.
Si remarques il y avait a faire, cela concernerait plutôt l'implication de John Mitchell. Finalement très discret côté guitare, mais beaucoup plus (un peu trop sans doute) du côté du chant en Lead vocal. Voilà matière a légiférer. Car Frost*, c'est d'abord et avant tout le bébé de Jem Godfrey. Autre point qui pourra en contrarier certains: L'absence totale de solo, que se soit du côté des claviers ou des guitares. Sachez que ce choix fût délibérément choisit par les 2 musiciens. Choix audacieux convenons-en, et qui signifiera du même coup que le plaisir est a chercher ailleurs. Du côté des batteurs, là en revanche c'est un régal intégral. Les 3 intervenants ayant été particulièrement gâtés en matière de mise en son. Chose qui m'avait assez chagriné sur Falling Satellites soit dit en passant.
A tous les sceptiques, je ne dirais donc qu'une chose: Laissez-vous le temps d'apprivoiser ce disque, et faites fit des formules 100 fois rabâchés afin de profiter pleinement de ce "Day and Age" au caractère bien trempé.

@Lolo_the_best59 : la production et le son n'ont jamais fait à eux seuls un album de qualité. C'est un marqueur de tous les albums de Frost, tout comme le fait qu'il y a toujours sur leurs albums 1 ou 2 titres énormes (ce que plusieurs commentateurs ici soulignent) tandis que le reste est de qualité très très moyenne.

Depuis deux albums Frost* divise et cet espace en est le reflet. Vous aimez et je comprends. Je n'ai pas tout aimé et j'explique pourquoi je considère que la moitié de l'album est du remplissage.

Une critique bien sévère pour un album qui ne manque pas de qualité, au premier rang desquelles une production irréprochable au service d'un son énorme.

 je suis d'accord avec la plupart des avis, votre critique est bien trop sévère. FROST a décidé d'emprunter de nouvelles voies plus faciles d'accès et moins électro, c'est un fait indéniable. Et alors? Le premier et les deux derniers titres justifient à eux seuls l'achat de ce formidable album. Certes on se situe bien loin de Falling Satellites et des Others... mais le génie est toujours là et même si aux premières écoutes leur nouvel opus semble plus 'pauvre', il n'en est rien. Vous devriez revoir votre copie, svp.
