"At the top of his art, Gojira offers with "Fortitude" a brilliant record, perfect range of what he knows how to do between brute force, rage and atmospheric melodies."

The "Magma" era was rich and strong for Gojira. Rich, because the record allowed him to establish his status as an international band: they were nominated for Grammy Awards and travelled the world with many headlining performances at festivals. Strong, because "Magma" was also a turning point, less extreme, sensitive and was a therapy for the Duplantier brothers. The continuation arrives after five years of patience, delayed because of the pandemic. After a more accessible album, it was interesting to wonder what direction the band would take, back to his roots or accentuating the previous idea. The answer leans somewhere in between: "Fortitude" comes across as a patchwork record of Gojira's career.

On several occasions, Gojira makes the powder speak and from the beginning with 'Born For One Thing', a huge slap in the shape of a wall of sound. Joe screams with rage and on the riffs and drums level, the band offers its famous recipe and impresses. In the same spirit, 'Into The Storm' or 'Grind' are just as mean and remind us of the "The Way Of All Flesh" era for the intensity and the outstanding technique.

But Gojira knows how to be melodic. "From Mars To Sirius" and "L'Enfant Sauvage" showed it and "Magma" confirmed it. Amazonia' is powerful and soaring. Tinged with a definite tribal strength, the spirit of Sepultura hovers, it is a remarkable cry of committed rage. On 'Another World', 'New Found' and 'Hold On', Gojira mixes atmospheres. He offers hypnotic soaring passages with strong choruses. The mystical force hovers over the duet 'Fortitude', 'The Chant'. The shamanic voice that accompanies the band brings a huge force, full of spirituality and tinged with melancholy. The title imposes itself as the heart of the album, the one that makes the difference. With 'The Trails' we finally find a catchy track full of charm, very airy and full of melancholy.

"Fortitude" shows a Gojira at the top of his art, mature and sure of his strength. It gathers all the qualities of the group and should allow him to confirm his place among the great ones of the international metal.

Le titre est en écoute est assez classique et finalement assez lisse pour ce genre de musique, avec des riffs souvent entendus, mais heureusement que la batterie de folie sauve l'ensemble.
