"With "Elasticity", Serj Tankian gives us a glimpse of what System Of A Down should have looked like if the band had continued to write music."

Who would have thought that "Hypnotize" would be System Of A Down's last album when it was released in 2005, a few months after the excellent "Mezmerize"? At the top of its art, the quartet announced to take a break one year later. The band re-formed in 2010 to go back on stage and even talks about writing a new album in 2016, but due to visibly artistic differences, the project is in stand by. After releasing two unreleased tracks with SOAD at the end of 2020, 'Protect The Land' and 'Genocial Humanoidz', Serj Tankian is preparing his return, eight years after his last solo album. His new EP, "Elasticity", includes five tracks that the singer had written about fifteen years ago and which were to be released on the next System Of A Down album.
It must be said that listening to the tracks on the EP, some of them would have looked great on a SOAD record, such as the eponymous and introductory track 'Elasticity'. We find there all the ardour of the charismatic singer and a zest of madness as we liked it so much. As the singer reveals, he has chosen to write songs in a more rock format. Perhaps it is this aspect that displeased the other members of SOAD, because it must be said that overall, this EP is more in line with Tankian's solo album than a SOAD album. 'How Many Times?' seems to be straight out of his first album "Elect The Dead". We sometimes find there the symphonic atmosphere that the singer likes so much, as confirmed by his wonderful symphony "Orca".
Exit the metal of his (former?) band, hello melodic rock. 'Rumi', the quasi-ballad rock of the disc offers more hovering tunes at times while the sumptuous 'Your Mom', surely the best track of the EP, develops melodies of which only the American-Armenian has the secret. Only 'Electric Yerevan' seems to be a bit behind the rest of the songs, despite the relatively new electro sounds that find their place on the whole.
On the disappointment side, one can wonder about the format of this record and ask oneself a simple question: why not an album, quite simply? But don't panic! Serj Tankian is apparently planning to release two albums of film music in 2021 as well as a piano concerto, proving that the musician definitely has several strings to his bow! On top of that, a documentary called "Truth To Power" has just been released to shed light on the singer's career and retrace his struggle in favor of his home country, Armenia. We are therefore looking forward to the continuation of the Tankian series! - Official website
