Between his last solo record "Sound Of Innocence" in 2012 and today, Kiko Loureiro left  Angra and became the lead guitarist of Megadeth. This change of status has not hindered his desire to produce instrumental albums and this is his fifth personal record entitled "Open Source" that he offers us.

Kiko Loureiro's ambition has always been to give high quality content in his instrumental records and not only for the guitar virtuosity lovers. They will certainly find something to enjoy in the modern playing and sound options of the Brazilian, between the collection of catchy riffs giving their characters to each track, his fingerpicking ('Du Monde'), the very expressive phrasing and solos, or the work on the effects ('Overflow', 'Edm (E-Dependent Mind)').

These aspects are only the layer of technicality that emerges from an approach constantly guided by musicality. If some formats anchor the work of Kiko Loureiro in the melodic tradition whose absolute master is Satriani ('Vital Signs', 'Dreamlike'), it remains nevertheless strongly crossed by a dimension of modernity in the use of certain keyboards ('Overflow', Black Ice', 'In Motion') and of a rhythmic game borrowed to the djent, which supports the effects of contrasts between the hardness of certain riffs and the smoothness of the choruses ('Black Ice' and its neo-classical harmonies, 'Edm (E-Dependent Mind)', 'Liquid Times', 'Running with the Bulls'). But Kiko Loureiro also lets emerge part of his Brazilian roots. They are expressed rhythmically through percussions ('Sertao', 'Running with the Bulls') and harmonically in the scales with exotic tones ('Sertao', 'Black Ice').

For the amateurs of modern rock guitar, "Open Source" is a little the holy grail. Kiko Loureiro is able to marry the Westerner sounds to with the tones of other cultures and to use the best of what djent has brought in the rhythmic approach without going demonstrative. The final touch, and not the least, is that all this is done with sense and melody. If he is not always quoted among the references of the instrumental metal music, "Open Source" is a further demonstration that Kiko Loureiro is part of the elite of the genre.
