England is definitely a fertile land in terms of artists who distinguish themselves both in their attitude and their music. Behind Yungblud is hidding a young man was diagnosed early on as hyperactive and treated medically, but he quickly decided to stop all treatment and accept his huge personality. This hyperactivity and attitude now liberated is reflected it in his music which is completely in his image: broad-minded.
"Weird!" is the second album of the Briton after "21st Century Liabillity" released in 2018. This album takes a bit the opposite of the previous rather dark, cathartic towards the look of others. From the start, it catches the listener with nervous and catchy alternative pop with the sequence of 'Teresa' and its memorable chorus and 'Cotton Candy', wiser and brighter. A little too wise Yungblud ? It's a little bit bad to know the man who manages to surprise several times with tracks close to punk ('Strawberry Lipstick') or metal hip hop à la Beastie Boys ('Superdeadfriends') which brings some grit to an album that could have been locked up in a too clean pop.
These asperities, Yungblud makes a force of it to absorb and to integrate them to enrich his album. The artist is clever, offering more all-purpose tracks ('Love Song') or very direct ones ('Ice Cream Man' with its hallucinated rhythmic) in order to hang up the listeners who would have been lost in his labyrinthine mind.
Finally "Weird!" is an album well anchored in its time, that of the playlists by its variety, and of the self-confidence. Yungblud chose to name his album "Bizarre", all in his image. It launches a buoy to which the persons who could suffer or still suffer from the judgment of the others but beyond it is addressed to any amateur of well produced and immediate pop. - Official website
