Last year, Pete Jones had already gratified us with a beautiful live performance, his first, with "A Visit To Zoetermeer". Following last year's pandemic and containment, the leader of the Tiger Moth Tales project certainly enjoyed some free time, and it is in this context that he gave birth to the unexpected "Still Alive".
The first eponymous piece, by the way, totally echoes the situation experienced during the confinement. In spite of the uncertainty, the multi-instrumentalist invites us to keep our spirits up. The nice clip, although a little "raw", coupled with a cheerful music, immediately gives us a smile, with its numerous participants and its positive message. Simple but colorful and well constructed, 'Still Alive' does good. On top of all this, seeing Pete Jones playing his lying folk guitar with disconcerting ease is always amazing!
In a very melodic register, let us greet the title 'Golden' where we recognize the paw of the English musician among a thousand, both in the sequences of chords played on the piano and in the writing. There is, however, this "Disney music" side that is often found in the compositions of Tiger Moth Tales. Nevertheless, the musician has this ability to write beautiful melodies that are immediately accessible while remaining rich.
The rest of the disc is astonishing to say the least. 'The Mighty Fallen', an instrumental piece, is full of ideas in the first few minutes with a very prominent keyboard and a funky guitar. Then follows a slower and very melodic section with a beautiful electric guitar solo before a finale that accelerates and ends in apotheosis.
The end of the album, on the other hand, is in half-tone. 'Lean Into Madness' offers a relatively mysterious and intriguing atmosphere, which is very innovative for Pete Jones. The beginning is very interesting and arouses interest, but in the end, the title never really takes off and even turns out to be rather anecdotal. 'Whistle Along' follows in his footsteps. The very childish start is interrupted by darker considerations that immediately contrast in the second half. One then wonders what Pete Jones is doing, and the transitions can seem somewhat fuzzy. Instrumental and experimental, the title displays a relatively progressive face, although the question of the real added value of this piece remains unanswered. A cover of 'Still Alive' closes the album without really adding anything to the whole.
In the end, the record lasts only 32 minutes, and if the artist talks about a mini-album, it is rather the term EP that comes to mind. With an interesting first half and a more dispensable second half, "Still Alive" remains pleasant and show us that Pete Jones is in good shape in these so particular times ! - Official website
