James Durbin is a native of Santa Cruz, California. His emergence in the world of rock dates back to 2011, the year he released his first solo album, but especially when his face appeared on TV screens during the tenth season of American Idol. On that occasion he proudly carried the banner of hard rock and even had the honor of performing there with Judas Priest in the finals. Fervent admirer of the latter, but also of Dio and Iron Maiden, he has just created his own metal band that he simply named Durbin. "The Beast Awakens" is his first album.

To set up his band, Durbin didn't hesitate to use his connections. So he invited to his party Mike Vanderhule, the drummer of Y&T, and a famous bass player who played with some of the biggest names in the six-string band (Ted Nugent, Yngwie Malmsteen, Uli John Roth, Vinnie Moore), called Barry Sparks. In order to support him in his rhythm work, our star of the day invited four studio artists for the solos and had one last pleasure in offering singer Chris Jericho (Fozzy) and guitarist Phil Demmel (BPMD, ex-Machine Head) to join him on one track. All the tracks were written by Durbin himself.

If you like the 1980-1984 period of Judas Priest and especially "British Steel", the Black Sabbath of "Heaven And Hell" and "Mob Rules", and the beginnings of Dio, you're going to be spoiled with this damn good classic 80's heavy metal album. You just have to listen to 'The Prince Of Metal' which sounds like a good old Iron Maiden song sung by Rob Halford, 'By The Horns' which is close to Judas Priest's 'The Sentinel', 'The Sacred Mountain' which could come out of 'Holy Diver', and the powerfull 'Kings Before You' where Phil Demmel releases a superb solo. Durbin combines on all the tracks of his opus the sounds, planes, typical melodic lines and structures of his three favourite bands. In order to add his personal touch, he brings a particular care to the refrains which mark the spirits.

This is the good surprise of the beginning of the year 2021. Coming out of nowhere, "The Beast Awakens" surprises us by its maturity, its sincere fidelity to the heavy metal of yesteryear and by the writing talent of a young artist who, no doubt about it, has not finished to make talk about him.
