"In spite of some timid attempts, Greta Van Fleet doesn't succeed in emancipating himself from the predominant shadow of Led Zeppelin on this "The Battle At Garden's Gate" whose qualities fade on the duration."

Beyond the talent of its members, Greta Van Fleet is a real case study in cloning legendary bands. We mentioned it in a previous review and it's no secret that the Michigan quartet offers what can be considered either a brilliant legacy of Led Zeppelin or a copy. And even if they had sparingly tried to move away from the shadow of the great blimp on their previous opus ("Anthem Of The Peaceful Army" - 2018), Josh Kiszka's vocals and his brother Jack's guitar systematically refer to the legendary duo formed by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. After three years spent by the band on the road and composing, "The Battle At Garden's Gate" arrives on our playlists and should answer the question of the path taken by the Americans.

An organ introduction and 'Heat Above' starts the hostilities on a very British folk-rock mid-tempo and in a very 70's atmosphere. If the copy of Zeppelin is less blatant than on the previous works of the US formation, the shadow of the English legend is however not far. Nevertheless, we have to admit that the Kiszka brothers and Danny Wagner try several times to go on paths less marked out by their omnipresent influence. The monumental 'Age Of Machine' unfolds its almost seven minutes in a cinematographic atmosphere worthy of a duel in the Far-West. The Barbarians' is heavier and more psychedelic and shows a beautiful intensity. Finally, 'The Weight Of Dreams' ventures into progressive territory, stretching out to nearly nine minutes with a luminous solo throughout its second half.

But if these efforts must be greeted, they are however not sufficient to sweep away all the reserves evoked previously. 'My Way, Soon' and its typical riff of Page, 'Built By Nation' and his reminding the one of 'Black Dog' while the one of 'Trip The Light Fantastic' plunges in 'Whole Lotta Love', or the blues of 'Caravel' are so many examples of an admiration which largely exceeded the stage of the simple influence. And to add to this handicap, the whole is very a linear. The attention ends up disintegrating in front of the sequence of mid-tempi and ballads, as pleasant as they are taken individually. Finally, beyond the similarity of his vocal organ with that of Robert Plant, John Kiszka has a tendency to abuse of cries whose utility remains to be demonstrated.

The discussions will therefore once again go well about this "The Battle At Garden's Gate" between those who will retain its intrinsic qualities and the benefits of a dive into an era blessed by the gods of rock and flower-power, and those who will not be able to get past an inspiration that is too prevalent at the expense of a real artistic identity. Kingdom Come had been lynched for less than that in its time. Other times, other customs! As far as we are concerned, we will grant a last joker to Greta Van Fleet by recognizing a certain talent but without succeeding in falling into a blissful admiration.
