One year after the release of the "Verkligheten" steamroller, Soilwork takes advantage of the end of the year to release not an album, but a new EP (even if with 38 minutes, we were still not far from an LP!).

"A Whisp Of The Atlantic" presents a novelty compared to its predecessor and not the least, since the eponymous track exceeds 16 minutes, which makes it the longest track in the Swedish discography. A few days before the year 2021, we found with 'A Whisp Of The Atlantic' a serious contender for the title of "song of the year 2020". If "Verkligheten" deployed a devastating power sometimes somewhat redundant despite a highly mastered recipe, the first track of this new EP is a marvel of diversity.

The title begins with a sweet piano melody, hinting at an epic sequel. The listener is already rubbing his hands as Björn Strid's clear voice resounds over already classy verses. Soilwork's best is to follow: distortion invites itself to party, the clear vocals give way to a more powerful and raspy register, the rhythm is heavier. Some passages are totally brutal, led by a thunderous blast beat and an evil guttural vocal, but the appeasement is never far away, like this finale where an unexpected trumpet closes the track, giving it an incredible dynamic. Certainly progressive, 'A Whisp...' is a marvel of richness, masterfully composed, without any superfluous length or section, and it is all the more remarkable when one knows that the Swedes are not used to this format which suits them so well.

Stunned by the excellence of this first track, the four other pieces may certainly seem a little blander at the foot of this mastodon. 'Death Diviner' is however going to have a certain advance on its partners of setlist with a very groovy Tool riff, and especially a very powerful and melodic chorus so well written. The efficiency is of setting like the last album of the musicians. Whether in a slow ('Feverish') or fast ('Desperado') register, the tracks are always as devastating and raw as ever. More melodic and restrained passages such as the finale of 'Feverish' and its magnificent melancholic violin bring a certain breathing space between the tracks.

In short, "A Whisp Of The Atlantic" is the surprise of this end of year, built around a dazzling lead track and four other tracks more concise and catchy, always as technical and titanic. The progressive dimension of the eponymous title seems to open exciting evolution perspectives for the band if they wish to move towards new paths in the future, at least that's what every progressive metal fan can hope for!

MAJESTICA: A Christmas Carol (2020)
MELODIC METAL - With "A Christmas Carol", Majestica gives us his musical vision of Scrooge's story. The result is perfect, at once fast, melodic with a strong Christmas spirit.
BRING ME THE HORIZON: Post Human: Survival Horror (2020)
ALTERNATIVE ROCK - After the "Amo" disaster, Bring Me The Horizon seems to have found the right balance between its early alternative FM metal heritage and its new more electro orientation.
