The party was beautiful but it is already over. The Michael Schenker Fest lived to give back the place to the legendary MSG after more than ten years of silence: "Immortal" marks the 50th anniversary of the German guitarist's career. In relation to the Fest, Schenker has renewed its line up by inviting Ronnie Romero, Joe Lynn Turner, Ralf Scheepers and Michael Voss to sing. For the music he invited Simon Philipps and Brian Tichy on drums, Barry Sparks on bass and Steve Mann and Derek Sherinian on keyboards.
At the start, Michael Schenker's great shape shines through. His riffs are perfect and his solos give the thrill with remarkable fluidity and finesse, right in the spirit of the golden age of the 80s. As far as singers are concerned, we are close to the perfection. Certainly, we can regret the almost total absence of the historical members and the osmosis of the Fest, but we do not lose at the change.
'Drilled To Kill' and 'Devil's Daughter' take MSG to speed metal horizons. Ralf's powerful and melodic voice works wonders and fits perfectly with Schenker's riffs, and on the first one there is a fabulous duel with Derek Sherinian's molten keyboard. With 'Dont' Die On Me' and 'Sangria Morte', Joe Lynn Turner is remarkable, bringing a warm voice with a catchy FM feel and great melodic power. Michael Voss delivers beautiful soft songs with a 70's spirit: 'After The Rain', a beautiful epic ballad full of feeling and 'The Queen Of Thorns And Roses', a good direct and catchy mid-tempo.
But the big winner is Ronnie Romero, impressive with a tone close to Dio. 'Knigth Of The Dead', 'Sail The Darkness' and 'Come On Over' are huge melodic heavy tracks. The warm and powerful voice of the singer makes its effect and reminds us of the great era with Gary Barden. Carried by intense refrains, these titles devastate everything in their path. The spirit of the 80's is there in 'Sail The Darkness' that has a certain similarity with Dio's 'Holy Diver'. Finally, there is a nice bonus with the rereading of 'In Search Of Peace Of Mind' by Scorpions. Well assisted by Ronnie Romero, Gary Barden, Doogie White and Robin McAuley, Schenker revisits the Scorpions classic perfectly with the 70's feeling.
With " Immortal ", Schenker signs a very beautiful album. A perfect condensed of classic melodic heavy, the record is a success carried by excellent singers and is the best realization of the MSG since its glorious age of the early 80s. - Official website
