With "1755", Moonspell proposed a parenthesis. A concept album sung in Portuguese, the record looked back on a moment in the history of Portugal with a baroque and theatrical side. The parenthesis is closed and the group returns to a classic format. In 2015 it had proposed with "Extinct" a remarkable album, at the same time gothic, melodic and powerful, a perfect synthesis of the Moonspell sound.

Since then Mike Gaspar, historical drummer, has left the band. And to follow up on this record is not easy for a band that is at a turning point. Fernand Ribeiro expressed it in an interview with melancholy as he talked about what he calls the beginning of the end of his musical career. The answer to these questions is called "Hermitage".

To express this, the power is set aside in favor of melodies and ambiences. The quartet formed by 'All Or Nothing', 'Entitlement', 'Solitarian' and 'Without Rule' is full of grace. Fernando's clear and pure vocals, with its story-telling side, gives shivers. The music is progressive and the shadow of Pink Floyd often hovers. The aerial and acoustic passages take you far away with a keyboard very 70's. The melancholy that emanates from it also evokes Queensrÿche's "Promised Land" for a result of rare beauty.

Moreover the balance is perfect with more classical tracks that keep a melancholic tone. 'The Greater Good', 'Common Prayers', 'Hermitage' and 'Apophthegmata' are successes that alternate atmospheres. One finds there power through strong riffs in intense rises in intense power. Fernando keeps the storytelling side but also knows how to make the force speak in a gothic metal spirit.

Very introspective, "Hermitage" is a journey to the heart of Moonspell's soul. It's a total success from an endearing band that still reinvents itself by flirting with the progressive while keeping its personality.
