Labyrinth, an Italian melodic power band, had given birth in 2012 to an offspring named A Perfect Day. This newcomer, which included three members of the combo, had received some good reviews for its eponymous debut album of melodic hard rock. At the end of the year 2020, APD's third opus (as it is often called today) was released. Its name is "With Eyes Wide Open", and its magnificent gothic cover is surprising. Would the trio have taken a new turn?
Before tackling this question, let us first of all specify that it contains an error. Indeed, this Italian brotherhood is now a quartet. This contribution is the consequence of the departure of the bass player-singer Roberto Tiranti, here replaced on bass by Gigi Andreone (Odd Dimension) and on microphone by Marco Barufetti (Enola Grey and Reply). On the subject of the chosen musical trend, if A Perfect Day has not completely turned around, he has nevertheless slightly modified his stylistic leanings. Indeed, although the combo has not deserted the lands of modern melodic hard rock, he explores now other styles like alternative rock and post-grunge.
However, even if at first glance it is possible to link A Perfect Day to this last current, notably because of the heavily rumbling guitars and the style of the melodies, the fact remains that the singer's voice takes him away from it. Indeed, Barufetti's voice is clear and seductive and often it is the illuminating melodies that carry the listener away. Thus, with this "With Eyes Wide Open", we are dealing with a mix of genres that ranges from classic melodic hard rock to bands such as Alter Bridge and even sometimes Black Stone Cherry.
Listen to 'Pull Me Out' and 'Give It Away', one tending towards melodic hard rock, the other leaning towards alternative post-grunge. They are equally melodically catchy and ideally represent the two trends chosen by A Perfect Day. Also pay attention to 'The Roots' with its Mama's Boys tune, the hard rock bluesy 'In My Room', the two successful ballads 'Whatever You Want Me (To Do)' and 'The Love We've Waited', or the catchy 'All My Life' with its dazzling final solo. Many of the songs are full of rhythm changes and will also appeal to fans of undulating structures.
A Perfect Day has matured it is obvious, and has chosen to trace a musical path that it is for the moment alone to take. So let your curiosity be satisfied, and listen to what these talented Italians have to tell you. - Official website
