Eclectic. This is the adjective that best characterizes Julien "Djul" Lacharme. Eclectic and gifted. Replacing Christophe Godin at the heart of Gnô was no easy task. But no matter what anyone says, neither was being the lead guitarist of Alpha Blondy. Few guitarists are capable of such a great stylistic difference. But for Julien, it's almost a formality. In his 23-year career, he's tackled so many different styles, from gypsy jazz (with Tchoo-Tcha) to metal (with Inuendo), to Irish rock (with Loden), that he's capable of playing it all. But to fully grasp his main influence as a solo guitarist, you have to go back to his very first band called Raspberry Jam. Naming his band after a song by Joe Satriani ('Raspberry Jam Delta-V' on "Crystal Planet") is not innocent. And "Bright Side Of The Sun", the second album of the Julien Lacharme Project, shows to what extent the American remains the greatest influence of the Frenchman.

Indeed, many are the tracks on which the shadow of the great Satch hovers: the very successful mid tempo 'Beyond The Mind', the aerial 'The Road Is Long', the folk rhythm and legato solo of 'Shining Eyes' which inevitably evokes 'If I Could Fly' from the album 'If There Love In Space' or the excellent 'Flying Machine'. But if Satriani is Djul Lacharme's main inspiration, other six-string legends live in his compositions, including Steve Vai ('Lovely Face In My Brain', 'Life Is Too Short') and Ritchie Blackmore (the solo of 'Our Secret').

Yet, there is a sense of fullness in "Bright Side Of The Sun" that has nothing to do with Julien Lacharme's models but rather with his ability to digest his assumed influences to make this album a fluid, coherent, and often more adventurous whole than many instrumental guitar albums. The guitarist imprints his personality and manages to surprise several times for our greatest pleasure: the jazz rock atmosphere of the very groovy 'Lovely Face In My Brain', the progressive metal inspired structure of 'Eternity', the choruses of 'Bright Side Of The Sun', until he manages to make the synthesis of his favorite styles with the brilliant 'Tree of Life' which will remain for a long time the best shred reggae song ever composed.

"Bright Side Of The Sun" is a very good instrumental guitar album centered around the melody and the insolent mastery of Julien Lacharme, who, by the way, signs himself the excellent production. By assuming his influences and trying new approaches, he proves that he is indeed in a good place in the closed circle of the best French guitarists. It is high time to give him the light he deserves.
