For once we are not going to associate here the melodic hard rock genre with Sweden but with Brazil. Landfall comes to us from Curitiba, one of the biggest cities in the country of the cariocas. "The Turning Point" is the first album of this combo found once again by Frontiers, or more precisely by Alessandro Del Vecchio, the prolific multi-instrumentalist producer, who brought this band to the Italian label .
This is the first album, but not the first experience for the protagonists composing this formation. Indeed, Gui Oliver, the frontman, has already been with the same label within Auras in 2010 with the opus "New Generation". As for his three companions, they participated in the Wild Child adventure with a trio of albums between 2012 and 2017. If Wild Child was close to Dream Theater, Auras sounded like Journey. Landfall chose finally to play AOR rather than progressive metal.
Oliver does not hide his admiration for Steve Perry while modestly admitting that it is unthinkable to be compared to the King. We can sometimes hear this one in the vocals of the man, but also Johnny Gioli (Hardline) and Eric Martin (Mr Big). A clever mix that allows to enjoy a convincing performance. The musical influences of the opus are as for them mixed, the AOR and the more biting melodic hard rock making here good household, evoking in turn Dokken then Hardline, Journey then TNT, Unruly Child then Extreme.
So, depending on your preferences, you can focus here either on the most energetic tracks or on the more mid-tempo moments. In the first case, you'll rather appreciate the opening of the opus with the swift single 'Rush Hour', the strong and very melodious 'No Way Out' with a solo that seems to come from one of Journey's 80's albums, and the hammered 'Taxi Driver' with a notable bass work. In the second case, you'll find more of the numerous mid-tempos that are scattered throughout the work, including the remarkable 'Jane's Carousel' and 'Sound Of The City', whose melody is a pure success. These less punchy moments are nevertheless carrying a communicative energy.
With this "The Turning Point", Brazil try to itself within the horde of the Swedish melodic hard rock bands that are currently invading our playlists. They achieve this with an undeniable know-how, guided by an assumed willingness to vary the tempos. Congratulations ! - Official website
