Fred Chapellier is a bluesman, a real one. One of those who discovered the blues in their youth and never got over it. However, to make a name for yourself in the blues, you have to go through the variety or mainstream box. And that's not Fred's thing, at least not in solo. His thing is blues, soul and guitar. And so much the worse for the recognition of the general public. So for all those who don't know this lover of 12 bars, ternary rhythms and pentatonic scales, the compilation "25 Years On The Road" is the ideal gateway to the universe of this great Monsieur of the blues. For the others, it's an opportunity to listen to tracks that have nothing to envy to some of the blues standards.
"25 Years On The Road" includes 18 studio tracks and 16 live tracks. Entirely remastered, the studio tracks show the full range of Fred Chapellier's stylistic influences, his natural tendency to color his blues with soul ('It Never Comes Easy', 'Sweet Soul Music') and funk ('Under The Influence', 'Funk It') and his pure blues guitarist talent ('After Hours'). And even if the groove dominates, emotion is never far away, with magnificent instrumental tracks ('3'45 AM') or heart-rending blues ballads ('A Silent Room', composed in homage to his father, is a marvel of sensitivity and feeling).
The live part of "25 Years On The Road" is a compilation of recordings of five live albums. Chosen with the greatest care, they show the full range of his inspirations, from blues rock à la Stevie Ray Vaughan ('Cold As Ice', 'B Shuffle') to rhythm and blues (the cover of Bobby Bland's 'Good Time Charlie'). Fred Chapellier dominates his subject with his soul voice, often close to that of Bill Deraime ('Rodney's Song', 'Le Blues') and of course his guitar playing. A game forged from his childhood by the study of the three Kings (BB, Freddie and Albert) and especially Peter Green and Roy Buchanan, without a doubt his main influence, to which he pays a vibrant tribute with the magnificent 'Blues For Roy'.
"25 Years On The Road" also includes two brilliant new releases, one in the studio ('Beyond The Mood-part II) and the other live ('I Am A Ram'). This album is the synthesis of a life entirely dedicated to the blues. Let's hope that Fred Chapellier will be able to regale us for a long time to come with his feeling and his flamboyant guitar playing because he is not only a blues player, he is maybe one of the very best French bluesmen of his generation. - Official website
