Founded in 2009, Lionville offered a first eponymous work that had garnered a significant amount of praise from fans of hard rock. Lars Safsund, frontman of Work Of Art, became the man at the microphone on the combo's second album, soberly entitled "II" which saw Lionville surreptitiously leaning to the AOR side as the following album "A World Of Fools". The band presents us today its "Magic Is Alive", that, let's say right away, won't change the deal.

We are thus here in the very heart of the AOR, the temple of cool rock attitude. To be more precise, we could evoke a modern European AOR with West Coast influences. The melodic know-how is undeniable and, even if there's still a feeling of déjà entendu, it may make your sensitive little heart palpitate. The work is highly stereotypical, but it must be admitted that the guitars are chiseled and the compositions undeniably refined.

There is a lot of Work Of Art in this "Magic Is Alive". There is often Toto, no doubt about it. But there are also reminiscences of AOR (Frédéric Slama's French band), Silence (Bruno Levesque's French band), Richard Marx and Stan Bush. In other words, the melodies are very sweet and show a certain elegance, even if some will qualify them as simplistic. The work is meticulous, some saxophone notes can be heard (the eponymous title), some touches of pop too ('Runaway') and even a blink of an eye to The Cure's 'Close To Me' (the introduction to the eponymous title)!

Inflexible AOR adulators will say that this record is perfect but Hard Rockers will say that this is not Hard Rock. If you're a member of one of these gangs, you know where you stand. If you're not, just test the product to make your own opinion.

Il est certain que cet opus ne réinvente pas le genre, mais il est tout de même sacrément bien troussé et ravira les amateurs d'AOR aux mélodies chatoyantes et dynamiques.
