Until now very regular, the Finntroll Finns have just come out of a seven-year break. It was questionable whether our trolls were going to emerge from their cave. Having made a huge start to their career, the band has been skating for some time. After two darker and less striking albums, "Blodsvept", the latest one, was correct but formatted, anchored in a festive folk without any surprise.
This new album is called "Vredesvävd" and was announced by its progenitors as a return to the roots. Quite short (less than 40 minutes), it presents a cover that sets the scene with a troll that seems to open the door to his universe. The title evokes anger and this will be felt several times on a record that comes back to the fury of Finntroll's beginnings.
"Vredesvävd" starts with 'Vaktaren', a perfect epic intro to take the listener to troll country. 'Att Döda Med Ed Sten' and 'Ormfolk' set forth an aggressive and deliciously old school black metal spirit that mixes with a catchy folk base. Fury is also present with 'Myren' and 'Mask', two speed metal tracks that make you want to stir in all directions with a crazy energy and a nice "oldies" style.
Beyond this raw sound is the more festive aspects that we know at Fintroll. 'Gränars Väg' and 'Forsen' with their choruses and their lively side are hits in the form of storytellings. They have good folk breaks, catchy melodies and an irresistible dancing character. 'Vid Häxans Härd' and 'Ylaren' are also brought out, mixing the moods. The first starts out softly with a beautiful folk melody before leaving in an intense rhythm while the second is a perfect story both dark and appealing with strong melodies and a break that kills.
With "Vredesvävd", Finntroll signs a record as good as "Nattfödd", his reference album, with a mix of power black metal and folk melodies. He's back on the road again in an impressive way and finds his rightful place alongside his colleagues who reign over folk metal.
