Since his second return in 2010 Armored Saint does not disappoint. In two albums he has proven that he remains an expert in heavy metal, carried by the voice of an imperial John Bush. The band likes to take its time, its members have extra musical activities and it takes patience to enjoy something new. "Punching The Sky" comes five years after a high quality "Win Hands Down" and we expect this eighth album to delight us just as much.

The line-up remains the same, united around Bush and Joey Verra. The opus is composed of 11 tracks and the tone is set with 'Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants', which reminds us in a flash of everything that delights us in Armored Saint, heavy and melodic riffs, the clear and powerful voice of John Bush, a well brought chorus, a high-flying instrumental part and a pleasant old school side.

Afterwards the album goes marvellously well and we can distinguish various categories of titles. First there are those in the lineage of the opening track. Thus 'End Of The Attention Span', 'My Jurisdiction' and 'Missile To Gun' show a work of goldsmith. As true craftsmen, the musicians shine on powerful hits that have everything to delight fans of the genre. Then come out more thrash tracks that stir well. In the spirit of a Pantera with the same groove, 'Do Wrong To None' is a slap carried by the powerful vocals of a Bush who varies the tones with class. The spirit of Anthrax is reflected in 'Bubble' and 'Never Your Feet' and the success is total: the musicians enjoy themselves in a pure melodic heavy thrash spirit.

Finally, what is also pleasing about Armored Saint is the catchy and melancholy side. 'Lone Wolf' reminds 'Only' with unstoppable melodies and an excellent chorus. 'Fly in The Ointrement' is a beautiful melancholic ballad in the spirit of what Iron Maiden proposed on their first album. Finally with 'Unfair' we find an even calmer track, soft in the vocals and riffs, all in sensitivity and which could be a hit on the radio.

"Punching The Sky" is a great record from start to finish. Armored Saint shows us the full extent of his talent with a beautiful variety of tones. He remains this old friend we love to meet again, a true depository of a classic heavy metal sound of great class.

HARD ROCK - Less black, more direct and groovy than 'Infinite', "Whoosh!" remains an excellent album !

MELODIC METAL - "The Last Viking" is a pleasant album that lacks a few strong tracks to leave a lasting impression.
