""We are Chaos" is madness, variety, finesse, rage, the science of sound, songwriting, emotion, depth and melody. An album by Marilyn Manson, solid as always."

Marylin Manson is a new artist, more blues, more rock, more authentic, always so exuberant, "finding strength through pain". He is also very productive since "We Are Chaos" is the third album of the eccentric American in only 5 years.

The cover, the title track and the disturbing introduction of "Red, Black and Blue" are made to warn the listener that he is about to enter a hard, dark and cold world. Manson's lively rhythm and raging vocals confirm this impression. The phrasing of the refrains remind us the two previous albums, where the singer takes up the main codes, affirming his new style by evolving subtly.

Among the novelties, the 80's pop aspect which enamels the album underlines the road travelled and makes think alternately of David Bowie (to whom Manson devotes a certain cult) on 'We are Chaos', Peter Gabriel on the languorous and magnificent 'Paint You With My Love', or the New Wave of the same period with the muffled melody or the vintage sound of 'Don't Chase The Dead'.

The other notable evolution is in the voice. Where the satanic rocker had smoothed out his vocals in favor of a rocky blues interpretation on the two previous releases, he now shows a much more pronounced versatility. From the aptly named 'Half-way and One Step Forward', he allows himself a characteristic screaming song like on the very industrial 'Infinite Darkness', and a more muffled and intimate atmosphere on the excellent 'Solve Coagula'. He is also a hard rocker on the punchy 'Keep My Head Together' and 'Perfume' sometimes flirting with the tones of Axel Rose under prozac.

The production of this "We are Chaos" is quite homogeneous and not as "southern" as the presence of Shooter Jennings on controls might have led one to think. A particular effort has been made on the arrangements and on the rhythm section very present bringing a pleasant balance to the whole. Only the guitar of Paul Wiley, the new guitarist on the strings, is a bit behind, his powerful riffs remaining the only weapons to his credit.

Fans of the new Manson will not be disappointed by this new delivery. It skillfully combines the recipes of the whimsical androgynous gothic with the legacy of his long career. Variety, finesse, rage, science of sound, songwriting, depth and melody, everything is intelligently present in this "We Are Chaos" which transpires the talent of an artist with an accomplished artistic maturity and cultivating his difference: "I'm not special, I'm just broken and don't wanna be fixed" (Solve Coagula).
