"Who said that all post-rock albums look the same? This "Primal" undeniably proves the opposite with its raw and organic atmosphere."

Starting an album with a strident, saturated noise may not be the best beginning for an atmospheric music artist. It is however what Jenhrä, a post-rock duo from the East of France, chose to do on their first album "Primal".

Fortunately, after about thirty seconds, the parasitic nuisance fades away to give way to a soft and intriguing math-rock harmonic, rising in power until revealing a raw and primary energy. The melody of this introductory 'Life' ends up trotting in your head and the accentuating riff quickly transports you.

Introspective in essence, Jenhrä's music, produced by Stelio "Dyp" Pagani, is very organic and the arrangements are often underlined by fine acoustic effects. The progressive rises are punctuated by skillfully constructed rhythmic breaks and the sounds borrowed from post-rock are embellished with minimalist phrasing reminiscent of the Far Eastern school of math rock à la Toe. The result is a very assertive style between contained power and melancholy. The few sound effects and samples evoking everyday moments (footsteps, human movements) or close and familiar nature (birds, countryside) plunge the listener into a poignant realism.

Jenhrä catches the listener with the most improbable of notes and doesn't let go, infusing the listener with her art during the 45 minutes of the album. The plaintive sweetness of the intoxicating 'Crepuscule', the melancholy power of 'Primal' or the raw beauty of 'Law of Gaia' are each more captivating than the other. One will simply regret the somewhat repetitive phases and a battery which would have deserved more madness to carry this 'Primal' towards heights which it seems close to being able to reach.

The post-rock scene, already rich of many young talents, sees a newcomer in the leading pack of original and talented creators. We can only wish all the success that this beautiful album deserves so that Jenhra will continue on his way and come back even more ambitious in the near future. A great discovery of the new season, warmly recommended to lovers of simple and organic post-rock.
