Voivod Canadians have been in impressive shape for a few years now. In two albums and an EP, they have regained the throne they occupied at the end of the 80s. The musical intelligence of their techno thrash has surprised more than one who didn't think Voivod were capable of regaining such a level of class and mastery. In addition to this intelligence, the band likes to stay close to its audience. During the lockdown, they shared videos and now we find them with a very nice little gift, a three-track EP available in digital and vinyl based on the track 'The End Of Dormancy' from "The Wake".
'Metal Section' is a version of this track on which trumpet, saxophone and trombone are added for a brilliant result. Already excellent, the song gains in emphasis with a tone close to the King Crimson of the 70s. The whole is still carried by Denis Bélanger's robotic and icy voice, taking the title to another galaxy.
For dessert, Voivod serves us two songs recorded at the 2019 Montreal Jazz Fest. In a jazzy version, 'The End Of Dormancy' is even more amazing. The other track is the classic 'The Unknow Knows' from 'Nothingface' from 1989. This title is a slap in the face with its technique techno thrash without neglecting the melodic side for a brilliant result relegating the competition far behind.
With this EP, Voivod offers a nice little gift to his fans. He shows an incredible shape and confirms his status as a band out of the ordinary. We also say to ourselves that a full live would be a nice next step in this faultless parkour. - Official website
