They are six, they are young, they are British and they celebrate this year the tenth anniversary of their first record attempt, a "Kiss Of Life" which, already at the time, had caused some shivers in the small world of melodic hard rock. "Grit Your Teeth", Vega's sixth album, was released today in your favorite record stores. Let's see if it is as exciting as his predecessor.
Behind Nick Workman, the ex-singer of Kick (author of three albums between 1999 and 2004), the Martin brothers still play bass and keyboards, accompanied by the guitar twins of Marcus Thurston and Mikey Kew. Vega had been sailing in the waters of melodic radio-friendly hard rock with a happy tendency. Did the two years that separate us from "Only Human" give the natives of Stratford-upon-Avon - William Shakespeare's homeland -, ideas for stylistic progression? Evolution or not, that's the question.
Listening to the opus, it quickly became clear that the English decided to shift into higher gear. This new album is definitely more strait forward than his big brothers. More powerful, more modern, this record now bears witness to a turn for Vega, or at least a new inclination. They wanted to produce something different with this "Grit Your Teeth", to stand out from the crowd.
Indeed, the riffs of 'Blind' leaves little doubt, like the powerful way Workman sends his vocal score. Vega is not here to joke, and already the shadow of the Def Leppard of new times hovers over the sextet. The energy developed here continues throughout the album '(I Don't Need) Perfection' or the eponymous track). The modern style of 'Man On A Mission' with its voice effects is even more heavy: Vega's never been so punchy.
But don't worry, easy listening is still on the program and 'Dont Fool Yourself Again', as well as 'Consequence Of Having A Heart', remind you of this perfectly. The latter has a particularity, its chorus is the twin of the verses of 'Mad World' by Tears For Fears, in a muscular version. 'How We Live', with its Leppardian backing vocals, and 'Done With Me', end this journey to success with brilliance.
Vega has just taken a giant step towards consecration. This album is such a satisfaction that it would be a revolting injustice if its doors were not wide open to him. 'Grit Your Teeth' will certainly be one of the best Hard Rock album of the year. - Official website
