Johan Reinholdz seems never really satisfied with new challenges, he has just signed in this year 2020 for the position of guitarist of Dark Tranquillity. But his two main bands, Andromeda and Nonexist, he created them almost at the same time, at the very beginning of the 2000. If the first one evolves in a classic and efficient progressive metal style, the second one is clearly a clever mix of technical death and thrash. And this fusion of styles is once again in the spotlight with this fourth Nonexist album.

"Like The Fearless Hunter" is an intense and uncompromising album, both eclectic and solid on its fundamentals. The alternation between the purely thrash songs ('Strictly Sadistic Intent', 'Dark Satanic Mills', 'Bloody Carnal Sorcery') and the death metal tracks ('Together We Shall Burn', 'Emerging From A World Below') is perfectly arranged and allows the band to combine powerful riffs and melodic research so as to never tire the listener and keep him on the edge of his seat under a flood of molten metal.

Nonexist plays on contrasts with impressive mastery, going from a beautiful melodic instrumental ('Fear Corrodes The Soul') to a furious and aggressive speed metal ('Scent') with disconcerting ease. Moreover, it is when they use death/thrash fusion within the same song that the Swedes definitely put everyone in agreement with inspired and well composed tracks, like the excellent 'A Meditation Upon Death'.

But the major asset of Nonexist is obviously Johan Reinholdz who, on "Like The Fearless Hunter", is on all fronts, from the composition to the vocals (growl and clear) while passing of course by the guitars. From this point of view, as usual, Reinholdz is imperial, in the solidity of his riffs as in the richness of his solos. The Swede explores all the technical palette offered by his two favorite styles and brilliantly alternates the unbridled and supersonic phrasings of thrash ('Strictly Sadistic Intent') with the very constructed melodic lines of death metal ('Together We Shall Burn'), for a result of a formidable efficiency.

With this uncompromising "Like The Fearless Hunter", Nonexist is clearly not here to laugh but succeeds in being as aggressive as it is melodic thanks to eclectic compositions and a sharp sense of riff that hits the bull's eye. An album for metalheads for metalheads.
