"Behemoth offers a new EP to its fans. "A Forest" is worth more for its two original tracks than for the cover that gives it its title."

It has become a tradition since the band was founded in 1991. Between two albums, Behemoth offers an EP to its fans. "A Forest" is the thirteenth and comes after the album "I Loved You At Your Darkest" released in 2018 which proved once again that Nergal's baby was indeed Satan's favourite son.

This four-track mini album is above all an opportunity for Behemoth to pay tribute in his own way to The Cure and to one of his masterpieces 'A Forest' released 40 years ago on the album "Seventeen Seconds". As it should be, the Poles deliver a black metal interpretation of it, declined for the occasion in two versions, one in studio and the other live. This mythical title, symbol of a once demanding cold wave, has already been covered in almost every style. Virtually everyone who's ever tried it, even Steven Wilson, has failed. Behemoth is no exception to the rule. His version is not bad in itself. The vocal duet between Nergal and Niklas Kvarforth from Shining works pretty well, especially in the live version. The bass is excellent and the guitars are dark enough to stick to the style of the Poles. Yet the magic doesn't work for a simple enough reason: Behemoth's version lacks the desperate romanticism that made The Cure's original work the symbol of the golden age of gothic post-punk. It's all the more a pity since, on paper, the filiation with black metal makes sense. But Robert Smith had finally understood Faust better than Nergal.

It's when he concentrates on his fundamentals that Behemoth regains his panache. The two other tracks of the EP fit perfectly in his discography. With their punchy riffs and demonic rhythms, 'Shadows Ov Ea Cast Upon Golgotha' and 'Evoe' are two little black pearls sculpted in extreme metal from which Behemoth has been releasing the occult forces for thirty years.

The interest of "A Forest" lies much more in these two original tracks than in the cover that gives it its title. In any case, this EP offers us something to look forward to the next album with serenity.
