From his debut album, "Moments from Ephemeral City" released in 2011, to the deserved recognition with "In Contact", Caligula's Horse has climbed very quickly in the progressive metal hierarchy. Engaged in a high rhythm of creation that brings a new album every two years, Caligula's Horse delivers for the fifth time the fruit of its labour.
Undeniable melodic qualities, an expert mastery in the implementation, the first two tracks are demonstrations, for those who still doubted it, of the talent of the Australians to compose a direct and powerful progressive metal. There are many similarities between Caligula's Horse and Haken, the other great name of modern prog metal. The subtleties of listening reveal a more twirling and daring side for Haken when Caligula's Horse displays more classicism and emotion. A track like 'Salt' alone sums up these impressions. There is clearly Haken in the epic introduction and the way the chorus is brought in, but the work on harmonies is driven by a concern to touch the heart and less the mind which is typical of Brisbane natives. Moreover, Caligula's Horse assumes its affinity with pop and this is more than ever true with the surprising electro-soul 'Resonate' or the delicate mid-tempo 'Autumn'.
Jim Valley's vocals once again hold their own and bring that extra soul that makes Caligula's Horse's metal so warm. In the intense 'Oceanrise' and the revolting 'Valkyrie', he knows how to be as deep in dark verses as he is luminous in the virtuoso musicality and modulation of the choruses. After a demanding "In Contact", the quintet has favoured fluidity of writing for this "Radiant Rise" without technical overload and very well balanced with enough details to allow an interesting and easy listening. 'The Ascent' is a proof that the eleven minutes is not the cobbled stone one would think it is. There is indeed a Homeric but short opening and some more striking djent milestones, but it is the comforting melodies and the intimate and ethereal atmospheres that really remain in the memory.
It is a Caligula's Horse in full confidence that is at work in this melodically attractive and technically accurate "Radiant Rise". With a mature writing style, the Australians manage to admirably dose the degree of complexity to allow the emotional expression they are so fond of to unfold in all its splendour. More than ever, Caligula's Horse is one of the references of modern progressive metal to be known. - Official website
