At the moment, it seems more and more unlikely that Ritchie Blackmore will one day deliver a successor to "Stranger In Us All" despite the resurrection of his Rainbow. And "Blue Ligthning" came to remind us, if need be, that there's nothing more to expect from Yngwie Malmsteen. On the other hand, we still know we can count on Axel Rudi Pell to bring the colours of the rainbow and more generally of this melodic hard rock from another age.

The German has never deviated, laying a new stone to his edifice every two years on average. And if he doesn't interest many people anymore and doesn't have in his bag jewels like "Rising Force", "Trilogy" or "Odyssey", the guitarist, author of a discography of a constant quality, doesn't have to blush at the comparison with Malmsteen. Some of Axel's albums are worth a "Fire And Ice" for example. This is the case of "Sign Of The Times".

A virtuoso soloist, Axel is not afraid to surround himself with solid musicians, like those who currently accompany him, whether it's the drummer Bobby Rondinelli (ex-Rainbow), the keyboardist Ferdy Doernberg (Roland Grapow) or the singer Johnny Goeli (Hardline). Gathered together for a few years now, they cement together an impeccable line-up at the origin of this vigorous nineteenth album. And this 'Gunfire', barely disguised copy of Rainbow's immense 'Kill The King', apart from being an excellent track, surprises us pleasantly by poaching on the lands of Dio.

Epic and heavy, 'Wings Of The Storm' reminds us in turn of the marvellous and regretted leprechaun, as well as 'Into The Fire', very heavy and close to a 'Gates Of Babylon'. Alongside the curious 'Living In A Dream' with its reggae tints and the obligatory ballad 'A Blind As A Fool Can Be', you'll find compositions coming from from the best of the 80's hard melodic music like 'Sign Of The Times' and its bewitchingly slow mechanics, the biting 'End Of The Line' with its typical Man in Black guitar eruptions, not forgetting a contagious 'Waiting For Your Call'.

Like the former Deep Purple and unlike Yngwie, Axel always knows how to put his guitar at the service of his band and perfectly oiled songs. With its heavy rhythm and its extremely melodic register,  "Sign Of The Times" is a very captivating album!
