Of all the formations Doom that have the vocals of a priestess, Lucifer remains one of the most exciting. Because the beauty has a voice as seductive as it is poisonous and she knows how to surround herself. After associating herself with a few figures of the British doom scene and notably the ex-guitarist of Cathedral, Gaz Jennings, she has been joined since the second album by Martin Nordin (Dead Lord) and above all the legendary former drummer of Entombed, Nicke Andersson, whom she has married by the way!
Because Lucifer doesn't just show his love for old-fashioned hard rock, he is a real old-fashioned band, both in shape and in substance. They provide numbered discs, like Led Zep did in its time for example, cut for vinyl with durations that never exceed forty minutes and they offer a shimmering and velvety doom rock enveloped by an authentic sound with an unstoppable sense of melody, darkly sensual. This is the last reason why Lucifer is above the rest, with a writing that is sharp and smooth, groovy and yet dark.
Nine tracks follow one another, each one more irresistible than the next, rich in multiple nuances. 'Midnight Phantom' and its final harpsichord notes, 'Leather Demon', a mellow mid-tempo, 'Pacific Blues' and its generous curves or 'Cemetary Eyes', a long and progressive escape with the shadow of a Blue Öyster Cult, mark out this menu which shows that with the recruitment of Nicke Andersson, his progenitors have found and fixed their signature, greasy and haunting, coloured with a slight sleazy touch.
Instead of furiously rock'n'roll tracks (the inaugural 'Ghosts'), Lucifer prefers the kidney strokes, either stirring ('Flanked By Snakes') or more vicious ('Coffin Fever'), but all of them are full of juicy riffs and fat bass lines. The beautiful Johanna, whose leather-covered voice seems to be extracted from an antique horrific film, leads us, mysterious and lascivious, through the corridors of a dark house whose walls covered with disturbing drapes gradually close in on us.
This third album confirms all the good that we think of Lucifer, thanks to which he continues to polish his identity whose dark romanticism is coupled with a heady energy. - Official website
