Sepultura never ceases to surprise. He had transcended himself with "Machine Messiah" proving that he was still able to innovate. The Brazilians' fifteenth album, "Quadra" is a concept taken from a book by John North about the number four, his relationship to world history and the culture and values of the band members. Composed of 12 tracks, it is an emotional whirlwind containing raw emotion, finesse and intelligence to offer an incredibly rich melting pot.
The base remains thrash but the band adds something extra to give raging tracks that know how to surprise. 'Isolation', 'Means To An End', 'Last Time', 'Raging Void' and 'Autem' are thrash anthems with an ever-raging Derrick Green, but each time a break changes everything. The vocals become quieter, riffs and solos become finer and more technical in a progressive spirit and aerial choruses bring a certain epic power.
But this is only one side of a record that is full of richness. It has several peaks that can be described as masterpieces without exaggeration. 'Guardians Of Earth' is a nugget worthy of a Grip Inc., with luminous orchestrations, intense thrash, backing vocals and an incredible Opeth-worthy break with perfect technique: thrills guaranteed! Equally orchestral, 'Agony Of Defeat' is a melancholy and epic gem with gorgeous clear vocal parts for an epic and gripping Devin Townsend result.
And it's not over yet, there's still a bunch of captivating tracks. 'Capital Enslavment' classyly adds a tribal spirit through the percussion. 'The Pentagram' is a high-flying instrumental alternating thrash, prog and jazzy break confirming the technical strength of the band. 'Fear, Pain, Chaos, Suffering' seduces with the voice of Emmily Barreto. Her powerful tone blends perfectly with Derrick's for a catchy result in the spirit of Metallica.
"Quadra" is a remarkable record from start to finish. It's the ultimate record that we can place at the top of their discography. If there is any justice, this record will surely be recognized as one of the best of the year and will allow Sepultura to regain the throne of the genre.
