Despite the defection of their second guitarist Alan Szczepaniak, Retrospective keeps a remarkably stable line-up since his first album in 2008. The Polish band has made a name for itself in the wake of Riverside with three remarkable albums and it returns with its latest effort "Latent Avidity" only two years after "Re:search".

No change of style to expect here: Retrospective always officiates in a progressive rock at the edge of metal, knowing how to harden the rhythmic if necessary ('The Seed Has Been Sawn') and keeping a beautiful melodic base with certain pop features ('Loneliness') which allow to anchor the themes in the listener's mind with a formidable effectiveness (the chorus of'In The Middle of The Forest','Programmed Fear'). The songs are based on discreet but very present keyboards, very much in the tradition of Riverside, and the general dynamism does not prevent us from reserving a few moments of calm (subtle drums on 'Stop For A While'). However, it is the guitar that is in the spotlight especially in the soli (double ration in 'The Seed Has Been Sawn'), even if quite a few instrumental parts are more like a bridge than a cleverly built solo.

In the middle of this well ensemble stands out the exceptional single of the album, "Still There", which will make fans of pure progressive music quiver with pleasure, since it brings together all the classical elements (studied bridges, progressive ascent, two very different guitar solos, final explosion in howling vocals) in a very well-posed and disturbing atmosphere and with neat arrangements. On the vocal side, it is impossible to ignore the progress of Jakub Roszak, who was until now a rather monotonous and who shows more commitment here and a liberated side that makes him go from simple singer to performer.

With "Latent Avidity", Retrospective confirms its position as a reliable value within a progressive Polish industry of recognized quality. Still no missteps in its career.

BABYMETAL: Metal Galaxy (2019)
HEAVY METAL - Easier to access and more varied than the group's first productions, this "Metal Galaxy" is not the total failure expected
SAPIENS: Sapiens (2019)
ROCK - "Sapiens" is a rather crazy project with ten different voices on ten melancholic acoustic songs. Despite some repetitions, a unity of tone emerges.
