What kind of music is this?  How to answer this question in one word when you can find, in a 40-minute album with 8 tracks, as many styles as progressive rock, jazz fusion, post rock, metal prog, psychedelic rock, neo-metal and cinematographic atmospheres. The guys de Remains Of Morpheus are precisely in the category of bands that do not have a category. So obviously, if you have to choose only one to attract the potential amateur, the exercise gets more complicated.

Progressive metal? Yes, but it's almost too wide. Yet 'The Awakening: déjà vu' and'Hunted (persecution)' are filled with characteristic riffs, rhythmic variations and tortured compositions. The structure of the tracks and the sound of the bass and the very organic drums will also evoke the math rock of a Toe.

Post rock? Mainly yes, and 'The Awakening: Fall in', with its slow rhythm and hypnotic harmonics clearly suggests it. But what can we say about the Gilmourian solo and the post-metal finale that reverse the trend by enchanting us with a variety of rhythms and technical mastery? Many other post-rock passages dot the album, which will lead us to label it as such in the end.

Kinematics? Of course! The introduction to Moving Circle could make a perfect soundtrack since an intriguing atmosphere sets in with subtle and exciting acoustic arrangements until the frenetic end. And even more so "DHD", a short piece straight out of a science fiction film in which the listener, with his eyes closed, abandons himself, wandering on a foreign planet in a disturbing final atmosphere.

Electro-jazz-fusion? Just as much. 'The Awakening: Déjà Vu' is a good example of this in its first part and, even more so, 'Hunted (prosecution)' combines them perfectly by alternating atmospheres. First of all, that of an intriguing and hypnotic pursuit close to "One Of These Days", then by racing into a syncopated rhythm close to Russian Circles and vanishing under the barely touched strings of a guitar that the equally minimalist bass gently and simply underlines.

Some will be able to reproach this album for going all over the place. But this is not to mention the many listenings that will allow the most assiduous to discover the innumerable subtleties of "XXI Parallels" and the delicate and abundant writing of a band still unknown but whose upcoming productions will have to be closely monitored. In the meantime, start by remembering his name, Remains Of Morpheus, and don't deny your pleasure by discovering this remarkable first effort.

OTHER REVIEWS
ARO ORA: Wairua (2019)
ALTERNATIVE METAL - "Wairua" is an explosive concentrate at the crossroads of death metal, djent and modern metal, served by a masterful technicality.
REFUSED: War Music (2019)
HARDCORE - "War Music" is an energetic, intense and (too?) easy to access album. With his noble anger, his chalouped rhythms and his direct melodies he seduces without difficulty.
