Kris Barras is continuing on his way, at a hundred miles an hour. Just eighteen months after the success of "The Divine And The Dirty" which earned The Kris Barras Band the title of "Best New 2018 Band" at the Planet Rock Awards, the Brit returns with a new album with an evocative name, "Light It Up". And it is little to say that the flame of rock and roll burns the body and mind of the former free-fight champion, who sees his musical career as a fighting sport: work, discipline and an inalienable faith in his ability to think-write.
That's the secret of Kris Barras, in his ability to compose real rock songs that hit the nail on the head right from the first listening. No need to rely on him to revolutionize the genre, he doesn't care like his first pair of gloves. His only obsession is to write the songs he wants to play and to take the audience into his universe on the edge of blues, rock and country.
"Light It Up" is thus in the tradition of "The Divine And The Dirty", a powerful and warm album filled with solid and catchy blues rock tracks on which Kris Barras' warm voice works wonders, supported by excellent gospel choirs ('What You Get','Broken Teeth'). Overall, this new album is more rock than its predecessor, like the excellent track "What A Way To Go" which combines a particularly catchy riff and very inspired old school Hammond organ chords.
Kris Barras is used to saying that "blues fans don't like him very much". If the statement is undoubtedly a little excessive, it must be said that the guitarist is not a bluesman but a real rocker. His short and sharp solos are constantly looking for efficiency ('Ignite (Light It Up)','6AM','Bullet') and his quest for groove pushes him to explore worlds other than hard blues, like funk ('Vegas Son'), southern rock ('Wound Up') or even jazz rock with the excellent 'Not Fading', probably one of the best tracks on the album.
Despite all its qualities, "Light It Up" is not a faultless one, however, because it falls twice into the trap of the agreed and dispensable ballad, "Rain" and "Pride is Forever". Why must a rock album absolutely include ballads? It's a mystery. Whatever, we can now understand why Kris Barras has become the best hope for the European classic rock scene. Let's bet that the best is yet to come for this sincere and talented artist. - Official website
