The least we can say about Soleil Moon is that it takes the time to refine its productions. "Warrior" which has just been released on the Frontiers label is only the band's third album in twenty years.

Don't be fooled by the metal/prog universe of the cover. If the female character represents well the "warrior" of the title, not an ounce of metal on the menu but AOR (mainly), melodic rock, pop, great American variety and a touch of funk. A lot of diversity for an album that can be summed up in two assertions.

The first is that "Warrior" is fun to listen to. The melodies are nice and immediately come to mind, Larry King has a grain of voice that gives each track a small melancholic side very pleasant. The album alternates energetic tracks (without ever exceeding a certain limit) with softer ones and the band has presence. '72 Camaro' and 'Nothing Matters' will remind you of Asia's glory days while 'Halfway to Nowhere' and 'Before the Rainbow' have all the slows you could wish for. "You And I", "When I'm With You" and the hidden title "420" play the FM pop card between Tears for Fears and Jason Mraz.

The second is that all this is very pretty and well done, but without any originality or surprises. The compositions have always the same structure (couplet/refrain/couple/couple/refrain/bridge/couple/refrain), properly executed but without risk taking and without any real passion. If everything is pleasant to listen to and even if some melodies hit the mark, it is a thousand times heard and totally interchangeable.

Everything will ultimately depend on the listener's tastes. Lovers of easy listening AOR tinged with pop, you will probably find something to eat here. The others will certainly spend a good time listening to this record but will not necessarily want to listen to again once finished.
