After 20 years of existence and 4 quality albums, Steel Panther had finally crashed with a "Low The Bar" (2017) that was very average and clearly on automatic pilot. Ready to pull themselves together and resume their march forward, the quartet recorded a new opus, except that a false manipulation caused the loss of all the tracks seized in the studio and forced the Californians to re-record everything.
With this "Heavy Metal Rules" Steel Panther regains power and energy and finally offer a new collection of hymns to scream live. The new opus is launched by "Zebraman" which is an excerpt from an 80's documentary. And here we go, alternating between festive tracks with unstoppable and colourful choruses ('All I Wanna Do Is Fuck (Myself Tonight)','Fuck Everybody'...) and heavier but just as catchy pieces ('Let's Get High Tonight','I'm Not Your Bitch','Heavy Metal Rules').
In the middle of this flood of incendiary riffs are two tracks playing on the contrast between calm verses and catchy choruses ('Always Gonna Be A Ho' and'Gods Of Pussy') before 'I Ain't Buying What You're Selling' surprises everyone with its acoustic atmosphere and its serious and committed lyrics. These tracks remind us that behind the salacious humour of the four men are hidden amazing musicians who have nothing to envy to certain shredders with excessive egos and other drummers who prefer demonstration to the interest of the performed track. For his part, Michael Starr is increasingly asserting himself as David Lee Roth's successor while Satchel's solos become bright and offer a very personal feeling.
After the disappointment caused by "Low The Bar", Steel Panther remembered that we had to do things seriously, especially when we don't take ourselves seriously. The result is unstoppable with a varied, effective opus, tracing the path of the band's first albums while evolving the quartet's sound thanks to the discreet but effective use of intelligent keyboards. When mastered to this extent, the art of caricature takes on its full scope and provokes a sense of well-being that makes us forget the shame that should overwhelm the listener when listening to some lyrics that are not always very poetic. - Official website
