The drakkar continues on its way and Amon Amarth remains solid against the wind. "Jomsviking" was a great album that allowed him to further increase his popularity, going far beyond the fans of melodic death metal to conquer a very large audience. His new baby was expected, the band is over 25 years old and we wondered if he was still able to move forward. This eleventh album is called "Berserker". The name is not unknown to the fans, Johan often wearing a t-shirt to the glory of the fawn warrior of the Nordic mythology. The cover features him in close-up and ready to fight.
The record can be listened to and discovered like a novel of epic adventures. Rougher and less direct than its predecessors, it forms a homogeneous block that requires a few listenings to soak it up, delivering an exciting journey to the heart of Viking life. There is often a dark and melancholic side to the songs, which combines well with their epic character. 'Crack The Sky', 'Raven's Flight' and 'Valkyria' are songs that make you want to fight, even if it is a losing battle. The titles are taken from the best of melodic death metal and carried by Johan's deep voice.
"Berserker" is an album full of panache, but also anger and despair. 'Mjoner', 'Hammer Of Thor' and 'Shield Wall' are gripping and dark with their old-fashioned death side that hurts. This panache is also part of 'Ironside' with its sweet intro melody, its classic direct side, its choruses and a well brought calm break. In this adventure novel idea there are also some chapters that stand out: 'Faner's Gold' and 'Into The Dark' are two perfect opening and closing tracks. The first one takes us into the story with a beautiful epic force while the second one is melancholic, full of violence and sadness. Finally 'The Berserker At Stamford Bridge' is a cinematic song that makes us follow the warrior with a strong epic side and unstoppable death power.
"'Berserker' is a dense and exciting album that shows a strong Amon Amarth, making us feel powerfully the pleasure he takes in telling the stories of the North, and the dive we take there is delicious. - Official website
