The Odd Gallant is the latest project by Guillaume Cazenave, a multi-card artist (musician, writer, photographer, filmmaker...). After the release of a first album, "AM", and before the publication of its successor, "NZ", "Official One" inaugurates a series of mini-albums, whose rather original press kit presents it as a more or less experimental concept, produced without any pressure and intended to give free rein to the unbridled imagination of its creator. This soft mini-album offers two tracks of about ten minutes each, between which two much shorter tracks have slipped.
To all credit,'June' opens the hostilities with music that balances modern progressive rock, like Steven Wilson, and post-rock. On a hypnotic rhythmic basis, Guillaume Cazenave creates a disturbing atmosphere, carried by a slamming guitar. A few well-punched guitar solos tear the atmosphere apart, as long as the floating keyboards help to create a bewitching atmosphere.
The second part of the track is more experimental, slowly rising in power with furious vocals, before ending in atmospheric mode.
The next two tracks, much shorter, will evolve in a much more experimental mode, presenting a collage of different atmospheres, different themes, sometimes passing from the rooster to the donkey at the risk of disorienting the listener, mixing big guitar riffs with electro sounds. The immersion is delicate, even if we end up assimilating these pieces to a short film soundtrack.
After an introduction by Edward Snowden,'One Glove' follows in the footsteps of the album's opening. After soaring atmospheres on which a floydian guitar is grafted, the slamming of the guitar with a contained metallic connotation redirects the track towards a post-rock of the end of the world, worrying but exciting.
An unclassifiable protean artist, Guillaume Cazenave has the talent to reinvent himself with each new musical production, dare I say without taboo or limits. The most open minds will follow, others may be more troubled. And this dichotomy alone sums up the impression left by "Official One". - Official website
