With "Lies and Butterflies", the Quebec group led by Michel St Père for more than two decades, fall within continuity of his last productions. With an unchanged line-up and a visual that is as inspired as ever, this new album inspires confidence from the moment you take it in hand.
And to kick off this new album, Mystery offers us a first monument of more than 16 minutes. 'Looking for Something Else' will immediately position the emotional cursor very, very high, alternating long symphonic instrumental parts carried by an enormous sound and production, with the leader's aerial guitars of course taking pride of place, and parts sung alternately powerful and delicate, in which Jean Pageau displays all his class, making us forget the very good Benoit David for good. And what about the final theme that covers the last 6 minutes and that will bring tears of pure emotion to the most recalcitrant.
After such a start, the sequel might seem a little less appealing. But the band's melodic talent and its ability to take the listener beyond the marked limits of the genre means that interest will never wane throughout the 60 minutes of the album. First of all, 'Come to Me' follows in the footsteps of Deep Purple, with its heavy rhythm. But it is above all and also 'Chrysalis', the second epic placed at the end of the album, which, in the middle of two enchanting parts with an unstoppable melodic theme, takes us to the borders of metal, sharp guitar and rhythm section in unison for a rather unexpected instrumental.
The different passages of the flute, close to Camel, present throughout the album will contribute to carry the heart of the listener a little further in a universe full of emotions. Finally, how can we ignore the wonderful 'When Dreams Come True', with its endless melody and guitar solos, supported by a solid rhythm section in which the drummer gives his all to his heart's content?
Composition, production, interpretation, everything is perfect on this album, certainly Mystery's greatest success to date, surpassing the yet excellent "The World is a Game". Nothing to add, this band is now part of the greats, quite simply. - Official website
