Which follow-up could we give to a masterpiece? To this thorny question, the Swedes of Opeth have found a relatively simple solution: make another one! With this 6th opus, released in 2002, Mikael Akerfeld predicts from the start that the successors of the sumptuous "Blackwater Park" will be a diptych composed on one hand, of the "clear" side of his art with "Damnation" and on the other hand of the "dark" side with "Deliverance".
To better define the content of this album, let's focus on the eponymous track that starts with the sprawling talent of Martin Lopez that goes with a heavy and violent riff as ever. This introduction is only an umpteenth foil to better discourage a stunned listener listening to the poignant atmospheric melodies to come which alternate with passages of extreme violence... After having lowered the weapons in front of so much virtuosity, genius, musical richness, the fatal blow is brought to us at the very end of this sublime piece through a hypnotic riff which never seems to want to stop and that we would like to be endless as it is so beautiful!
Even if this opus is supposed to reflect the dark side of the Swedes, they still care about the feelings of their listeners by offering them two majestic tracks that let us foresee what the future "Damnation" will hold... For two tracks, Opeth plunges us into a world of icy beauty and deep sadness with the acoustic instrumental "For Absent Friends" and the semi-acoustic "A Fair Judgement", in which the graceful melodies mix with the now perfectly mastered clear vocals of master Akerfed...
However, as it is indicated in preamble, "Deliverance" is supposed to reveal the extreme part of the band and as such, Mikael Akerfeld takes back his big voice to bring us back to this "hard" reality with "Master Apprentice" followed by "By the Pain I see the Others"... As on the eponymous track, beautiful atmospheric passages alternate with hyper-aggressive parts where Akerfeld drives the nail in with a perfect mastery of the vocals, both guttural - and understandable, a rare thing - and clear.
Just by mentioning so much brilliance, one could reduce Opeth to the only voice of this band; it is not the case! It is enough to listen to the final riff of "Master Apprentice", which is simply monstrous, where all the instrumentalists and technicians put their virtuosity at the service of sumptuous compositions.
The imposed stylish exercise which was to follow the perfect "Blackwater Park" is successful with the masterly "Deliverance". From then on, with this opus, Opeth definitively establishes its metallic supremacy to become a cult... - Official website

Opeth are back with a new album, and what an album it is! A concept based around the legacy of a sterile and cruel patriarch, illustrated by the return of the long-awaited growls!
