With Michael Schenker, we are never immune to surprises as the German guitarist likes to propose new things. He seemed to have found a solid formation with the Temple Of Rock but he changed course with the Michael Schenker Fest. This band dates back to a concert at Sweden Rock 2016 that allowed them to reconnect with Gary Barden, Robin McAuley and Graham Bonnet.
A live show followed with great success, and this little world had the crazy idea of releasing an album with Doogie White as well. This gives us a record, "Resurrection", with the biblical cover - it would have seemed impossible a short while ago. The bet was risky, we have to make all these egos coexist without falling into cacophony. A balance was found with two songs sung by four people and a fair sharing behind, with Michael Voss-Schonn taking care of the choirs. And by a small miracle, the result is a success, Schenker avoiding to put himself forward too much.
This allows us to reconnect with the atmosphere of the MSG at different times. Robin McAuley opens the disc with 'Heart And Soul' and illuminates it with his vocal power. He then confirmed with "Time Knows When It's Time" that he remains a formidable heavy metal singer, making you enjoy neat and easily memorable choruses. Graham Bonnet remains at 70 years old an exceptional singer and the close Rainbow tone of a "Night Moods" is cut for his rocky and so warm voice.
Gary Barden is the historical singer and to find him back with Schenker is a real pleasure. 'Messin' Around' and 'Living In A Life Worth Living' take us back to the 80's with an enormous freshness, carried by an amazing Barden with its powerful timbre. With White, we find classic titles from the recent MSG with in particular a remarkable 'Take Me To The Church'. With a wonderful chorus, this title proves the relevance of White's choice a few years ago. 'Warrior' and 'The Last Supper' sung in choirs are pretty successful in the MSG's classical musical lineage. On the guitar, Schenker shines with a thousand lights with a perfect fluidity in every riff and solo and has fun with 'Salvation', a high-flying instrument. We will also note Kirk Hammet's featuring for a solo on "Heart And Soul", a nice gift from him because his interventions outside Metallica are rare.
"Resurrection" is a beautiful gift from Michael Schenker to his singers. He puts them all in the spotlight in a remarkable way with this beautifully fresh album. It is impossible to know if the Michael Schenker Fest will give us other albums, but in any case we can enjoy this one without limits. - Official website
