"Less catchy than Accelerated Evolution, Synchestra remains a good Devin Townsend album."

The arrival of this Synchestra at Music Waves was synonymous with excitement and impatience. After a flawless "Accelerated Evolution", was the crazy Devin Townsend going to score a double? The multiple listeners gave their verdict... It's a relative disappointment.
However, the beginning of the album only foreshadowed good things: a very soft guitar intro followed by an explosive instrumental to wake up the dead and finally a first real track in the line of what Devin could already do.
Unfortunately, the return to earth happens quite quickly from track "babysong" with melodies that seem to come straight out of a Stone & Charden album. Of course the "Townsendian" sound is there, but the result is still distressing. The "funny" interlude that makes room for the next track is not very useful.
If the rest of the album is far from being bad, it don't take off. By lengthening the duration of most of these compositions without adding new things, Devin has only made them repetitive and even boring (track 13). To top it all off, the vocals fade away at 2/3 of the album to make way for screams.
The rather negative tone of this review should not, however, deprive Synchestra of any chance of attracting a crowd of hairy people in search of sensations. For even if it seems less catchy "than Accelerated Evolution", it still has many assets: the characteristic guitars delivering a rare amplitude and power, Devin's vocal skills or the deafening aggressive parts.
Synchestra can thus prove to be a good first album to discover Townsend's very personal musical universe. Those who already knew his work may not find the same sensations that his previous work could offer. - Official website
