What could be better than a return to the roots to get back on track? Black Stone Cherry has been recording albums with varying degrees of success since their first album was released more than ten years ago. It is with a six track EP that the Kentucky boys explore blues standards and arrange them in their own way. "Back To Blues" is well named and is a new modern and fleshy incarnation of classical Blues.
Thus the talent of artists such as Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Freddie King and Albert King is revisited through essential titles that are unanimously accepted within the group. Willie Dixon is in the spotlight for composing 'Built For Comfort' and 'Hoochie Coochie Man', performed and made famous by Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters respectively in the 1960s. Black Stone Cherry brings to these well-known tracks a sticky, fat, resolutely saturated and gravelly sound. Chris Robertson's vocals, rocky and powerful, have that grain and light veil that are perfectly suited to blues rock, here supercharged. Because the blows leaned on the barrels and the general heaviness confer to these interpretations a southern rock character or even stoner of the best effect.
The quartet thus brings a contemporary breath to these old hits through sound but also through successful rearrangements. The gentle passage of 'Built For Comfort' does not take up the dynamic phrasing of the Howlin' Wolf massif but reveals the softest and most subtle aspect of the southerners' music. The most famous song is undoubtedly 'Hoochie Coochie Man', popularized by Muddy Waters in 1954 (and later accompanied by The Rolling Stones) then by The Allman Brothers Band, Chuck Berry or Eric Clapton. Here, we are dealing with a more dynamic version that respects the original version. Another Muddy Waters track covered in the 1960s by The Rolling Stones,'I Want To Be Leved' closes the EP with the same recipe and the same energy, the harmonica and the unbridled guitar solo, all on a very classical rhythm but with a perfectly controlled groove.
A rather refreshing EP from Black Stone Cherry with blues standards that it are good to listen to again in more current versions. The band surfs on a deserved success with timeless titles very well reinterpreted. - Official website
